RURAL FRANKFORT - TARRIFS


As part of the ongoing efforts to ensure a sustainable and reliable electricity supply, the Mafube Local Municipality in the Rural Free State region has announced proposed changes to its electricity tariffs for the fiscal year 2024/2025. These new tariffs are set to take effect from July 1, 2024. This article provides an overview of the proposed increases and their implications for different categories of consumers.

Overview of the Tariff Changes

Eskom, the primary electricity supplier to municipalities, has announced a tariff increase of 12.72% for municipalities. In response, the Rural Free State is planning an average increase of 10.8% across various consumer categories. The adjustments aim to balance the need for maintaining infrastructure and services with the economic realities faced by consumers.

Detailed Tariff Breakdown

1. Domestic Users:

  • Conventional Single Phase and Three Phase Time of Use Tariff:

  • Basic Charge: Increased from R164.47 to R182.23 (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge Peak: Increased from R2.7099/kWh to R3.0026/kWh (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge Standard: Increased from R2.2501/kWh to R2.4931/kWh (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge Off Peak: Increased from R1.7419/kWh to R1.9300/kWh (10.8%)

  • Prepaid Single Phase Flat Rate Tariff:

  • Basic Charge: Increased from R164.47 to R182.23 (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge (various bands): Increased by 10.8% across different usage levels.

2. Business & General Users:

  • Single and Three Phase Time of Use Tariff (< 80 A):

  • Basic Charge: Increased from R441.31 to R488.97 (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge Peak: Increased from R2.4187/kWh to R2.6799/kWh (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge Standard: Increased from R2.0125/kWh to R2.2299/kWh (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge Off Peak: Increased from R1.5579/kWh to R1.7262/kWh (10.8%)

3. Large Power Users:

  • Time of Use Tariff:

  • Basic Charge: Increased from R877.94 to R955.20 (8.8%)

  • Energy Charge Peak: Increased from R6.0754/kWh to R6.7315/kWh (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge Standard: Increased from R2.8553/kWh to R3.1637/kWh (10.8%)

  • Energy Charge Off Peak: Increased from R1.8874/kWh to R2.0912/kWh (10.8%)

4. Agricultural Tariff (NEW):

  • Applicable to agricultural producers with supply sizes between 50 kVA and 300 kVA.

  • Basic Charge: Introduction of a new rate at R1,456.62/month.

  • Energy Charge: Various charges introduced with increases aligned with other categories.

5. Energy Export - Surplus PV (SSEG):

  • Adjustments in energy charges and network access charges to promote sustainable energy practices.

6. Municipal and Public Schools:

  • Single and Three Phase, Flat Rate Tariff:

  • Basic Charge: Increased from R877.94 to R955.20 (8.8%)

  • Energy Charge Peak: Increased from R6.2560/kWh to R6.8065/kWh (8.8%)

  • Energy Charge Standard: Increased from R3.2258/kWh to R3.5097/kWh (8.8%)

  • Energy Charge Off Peak: Increased from R2.3851/kWh to R2.595/kWh (8.8%)
