The National Department of Health has expressed growing concern over the recent increase in confirmed Mpox cases. This escalation mirrors the situation in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which initially reported a few cases but now faces a staggering count of approximately 7,000 cases.
In response to the rising numbers, the department has urged all citizens to collaborate with the government to curb the spread of the Mpox virus. The call to action follows the confirmation of another Mpox-related death, bringing the total number of fatalities in South Africa to three. To date, South Africa has recorded a total of 16 Mpox cases.
Foster Mohale, the department’s spokesperson, highlighted the significant risk factors identified among the affected males, who are aged between 23 and 43 years. Mohale noted that these individuals often have underlying health conditions, such as HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and diabetes, which compromise their immune systems and increase their vulnerability to the virus.
“What we’ve identified, that is putting most of these at higher risk, is that most of them are living with other underlying conditions like HIV, TB, and diabetes. This means that their immune systems are somehow compromised, which is why some of them get hospitalized for a longer time,” Mohale explained.
He emphasized the importance of adhering to treatment regimens for existing health conditions to bolster immune defenses. “Hence, we say anyone who’s taking treatment for any other health condition needs to adhere to that treatment, which will assist them in boosting their immune system against diseases like Mpox or flu,” Mohale added.
The department's plea for public cooperation underscores the critical need for community involvement in mitigating the spread of Mpox. As the situation evolves, continued vigilance and adherence to health guidelines remain essential in safeguarding public health.
